Our Computer-Like Mind: De-fragmenting Your Body’s Hard-Drive

Computer-Like Mind

How many ideas hover dispersed in my head of which many a pair, if they should come together, could bring about the greatest of discoveries! – Lichtenberg, Aphorisms, 1764-99

We now live in the age of information and technology, where everything moves with lightning speed and information is everything. Success or failure in today’s world is to a large extent determined by the quality of information we have at our fingertips, and the time it takes for us to have it. For this reason, it is easy to see why so many of us are in such a hurry with everything we do and hardly find time to unwind as we are pulled helter-skelter.

For those of us who work with computers in our jobs or at home, the most annoying and irritating thing is for the computer or laptop to start playing up at the exact moment we need an important document to be completed, e-mailed and printed. Anyone who has had such an experience will agree with me when I say that it takes some kind of divine intervention to prevent one from causing serious harm to the computer. But intellect allows us to know that nothing will be achieved from such a course of action, except wasting more time and money. So we are compelled to look for a less stressful remedy to the situation. The solution in such instances usually comes after taking a deeper look at the problem and finding out exactly why your Dell or iMac is moving so sluggishly.

A closer inspection usually reveals internal issues that have to do with the PC’s hard-drive and this must first be taken care of before any further work can begin. At this point, a computer expert will start to look at ways of reducing the hard-drive’s workload and increasing its disk-space. It may have a virus or be over-cluttered with a host of unnecessary information which is the actual cause of its slow functionality. This is when a clearing out or de-cluttering of such nuisance material will be performed.

Following the removal of the harmful viruses and useless information, an expert would not immediately think that the job was now done and the computer was safe and fit for use, no way! A true Information Technology expert will then empty the recycle bin, clean out the computer’s registry and perform a de-fragmentation of the hard-drive. Finally, a more powerful anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewall software will be installed for protection from further malicious agents and the PC will be re-booted. The whole process will obviously take some time – depending on the severity of the issues – but once the computer is restarted, hey presto! We have the green light and we feel like we’ve hit the jackpot. Bingo! We can now continue with our work in a much more confident, efficient and relaxed manner that actually allows us to be more creative and fun loving at the same time. We are able to do this simply because our PC’s storehouse freed up a lot of space that previously belonged to something called junk and now, it has ample space; enough to tell Houston that it has lift-off!

In conclusion, I would like to say that I have noticed that the human mind works in pretty much the same way as the above illustration. When our mind – the body’s hard-drive – is filled to the brim with useless unnecessary information, we are essentially paralysed and hindered from taking any real action that will result in the creation of something constructive.

Whenever we find ourselves procrastinating and lacking ‘hard-drive’ or ambition, it is precisely at such moments that we need to do just as any insightful I.T. specialist would. This is when we need to ask ourselves deeper questions about what unnecessary or unproductive ideas we have downloaded or installed into our subconscious. We need to search for those hidden viruses; those unproductive opinions that have been suggested to us by others;  those ideas lacking creativity that we have unfortunately allowed to come in to infest our thought patterns.

When we find and identify such malicious thought processes, we must then delete them, empty our recycle bin and clear the registry of any leftover caches or cookie crumbs. After securing some much needed mind-space, we must de-fragment everything that we have decided to keep in our storehouse so that our remaining thoughts can be aligned and become coherent. This makes for easy referencing whenever we require vital information.

The final and most important part of this de-cluttering process is the protection of the mind-space and the useful information we have managed to salvage and decided to keep. Following this, it is essential that we install a super-efficient anti-virus software like Microsoft Security Essentials, and turn-on our firewall to be on the look out for potentially harmful threats to our new found clarity of mind. Once we are able to do this, we will regain our natural confidence; our natural drive; our natural state of mind that will enable us to push on and create a better existence for ourselves and for those around us. All you need to do is simply free your mind!

Computers are magnificent tools for the realization of our dreams, but no machine can replace the human spark of spirit, compassion, love, and understanding – Louis Gerstner
